Free Pattern -- Easy Baby Yoke Sweater



NOTE: Pattern Corrected as of July 2008. Changes are in bold below.
Size: 3 (9, 12, 24) month
Chest: 18 (22, 24, 28)”
Length: 9 3/4 (11 1/2, 13, 15)”

Gauge: 3 1/2 stitches and 4 1/2 rows equal 1 inch

Materials
1 (2,2,2) skeins of Blue Sky Cotton (Just a warning, I made the largest size and just barely finished by second skein. Just in case, you might want to get an extra skein for the largest size.)
Needle: US10 and US 9 24” circular knitting needle
4 stitch holders
darning Needle
6 buttons

Note:
1. The sweater is worked back and forth on circular knitting needles to accommodate the number of stitches.
2. The lower body and sleeves are knit in stockinette stitch.
3. The yoke is knit in garter stitch.

Abbreviations:
RS: Right side
WS: Wrong Side
PM: Place marker
K2tog: Knit next two stitches together
Kf&b: Increase stitch by knitting into the front of the next stitch and then knitting the back of the same stitch.

Lower Body
With the larger circular needle, cast on 64, (76, 84, 96) stitches.
Knit six rows.
With the Right Side facing, start stockinette stitch.
Continue working in stockinette stitch until sweater measures 6 ½ (8, 9, 10)” ending on a wrong side row.
Next row (RS): Knit 19 (22, 24, 27) place last 6 stitches on a holder, knit 32 (38, 42, 48), place last 6 stitches on a holder, knit to end.
Set body aside as we work on sleeves.

Sleeves (make 2)
Cast on 19 (21, 25, 28) stitches.
Knit 4 rows.
Work 4 rows in stockinette stitch.
Next row: (Right Side Row): K1, m1, knit to last three stitches m1, k1.
Repeat the last 5 rows 3 more times until 27 (29, 33, 36)

Continue to work sleeves in stockinette stitch until sleeve measures 4 ½ (5, 5 ½, 6)”
Note: before joining to the yoke, place the first and last 3 stitches of each sleeve on stitch holders.

Join Sleeves to Body:
WS row: Knit 13 (16, 18, 21) , knit 21 (23, 27, 30) stitches from the first sleeve, knit 26 (32, 36, 42) stitches from the back, knit 21 (23, 27, 30) stitches from the second sleeve, knit 12 (16, 18, 21) – total stitches 94 (110, 126, 144)

Work in garter stitch (knitting every row) for 6 rows ending with a wrong side row.
Next row (RS): k2 ( 1 3, 3) *k2 k2tog, k2 repeat from * to last 2 (1,3,3) stitches, k2 (1, 3, 3) – 79 (92, 106, 121) stitches
Work stockinette stitch for 3 rows

Next row: (RS): k2 (4,1, 3) *k1 k2tog, k1 repeat from * to last 1 (4,1, 2) stitch(es), k1 (4, 1,2) – 60, (70, 80, 92) stitches
Work stockinette stitch for 3 rows.

Next row: (rs): K0(1,0,0) *k2tog across row repeat from * across row until last 0 (1, 0,0) stitch k0 (1, 0,0) – 30 (36, 40, 46) stitches
Work 1 row.

Button Band –
Change to smaller knitting needles, and with right side facing, start at the lower left hand front corner, pick up 28, (30, 36, 42) stitches evenly, place marker, knit across neck stitches, place marker and pick up 28 (30, 36, 42) stitches.
WS row: knit one row.
Next right side row: knit to one stitch before marker, Kf&B, slip marker, KF&B, knit to one stitch before next marker, Kf&b, slip marker Kf&b knit to end.
WS: knit.
Repeat the last two rows once more.
Next row place buttons. Evenly place 6 buttons as follows: *k3 (3, 4, 5), yo, k2tog repeat from * 6 times, continue knitting to first marker, knit to next marker, slip marker, k0 (2, 2, 2), *k2tog, yo, k3 (3, 4, 5) repeat from * to end.
WS: Knit
RS: knit to one stitch before marker, Kf&B, slip marker, KF&B, knit to one stitch before next marker, Kf&b, slip marker Kf&b knit to end.
WS: knit.
RS: bind off all stitches.





Finishing

With darning needle, weave in ends.

Sew under arm seams and graft under arms stitches to yoke stitches.

Sew buttons and ENJOY!

Hi!

I just have a question... when it's time to make the sleeves, do you cast them on next to the body of the sweater on the circular needles and then move them to another needle until it's time to attach them?
