Knitters Unite and Support Event November 19

This summer, I had the pleasure to meet women from Bhutan who had just arrived in the United States. My first thought was how different we could be but then I learned that they were all knitters. We spoke different languages but we easily communicated about knitting, fibers and yarn. Working with the International Refugee Committee, I donated a bunch of my stash to these women. They needed yarn to start a small business

Now, I'm pleased to announce that these women will be at Stitch DC to sell their finished garments. 100 % of the profits will go to support these women's new lives here in the States.

Sweater class in September

Yes, It will get cold again. Already, some morning you can feel a bit chill. Are you ready? Do you have your sweaters planned for the Fall? We have a class starting September 8 where you can knit your first sweater or make another great sweater with expert assistance. I will be teaching this class and sharing all my designer tips and pointers. I've been digging through raverly for patterns to share with my students. Here are a few that I recommend for class. Baby Socks -- Free pattern

I'm not so much a sock knitter but occasionally I need a quick gift or instant gratification of baby things. Although I don't have any small babies, I can still whip out a pair of socks for Oonagh in a jiffy. Here is a free pattern that I designed for Stitch DC that is for newborn to 6 month old babies. I used Aurora 8, a super soft washable merino, and size 6 needles so I had a pair knit in less than 2.5 hours!

Baby socks

Suggested Materials
50 yards of worsted weight yarn. (sample was knit with Aurora 8; one skein would produce two pairs)
US 6 double pointed needles (or circular needles if you prefer magic loop or two circulars)

Notes:
1. These socks are knit from the toe up in the round.
2. The pattern is written for double pointed needles but as long
as you indicate each needle divide, you can modify it to magic loop or two circulars.

Cast on using turkish cast a total of 16 stitches. Knit these stitches
Knit one more round. At this point you can divide the stitches as follows

needle 1: 8 stitches
needle 2: 4 stitches
needle 3: 4 stitches

Start two increases as follows:
Round 1: needle 1: k1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1; needle 2: k1, m1, knit to end of needle; needle 3: knit to last stitch, m1, k1
Round 2: knit all stitches
Repeat these two round once more. (24 total stitches as follows needle 1: 12 stitches; needle 2: 6 stitches; needle 3: 6 stitches)
Knit in the round for an additional inch.

The Heel
Build the gusset as follows:
Round 1: needle 1: k1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1; needle 2: knit; needle 3: knit
Round 2: knit all stitches
Repeat last two rounds until Needle 1 has 22 stitches.
Please note during this section, we are only increasing on needle 1.

Turn the heel:
Please note for the next section, we are only working needle 1:
Next round: knit 11 stitches, place marker, knit 2, k2tog, k1 TURN work
Next row: still working on needle 1: purl to marker, p2, p2tog, p1 TURN

Right side rows: *Turn. Slip 1, knit back to the gap, knit the stitch before and after the gap together. Knit 1.

Wrong side rows: Turn. Slip 1, purl back to the gap, purl the stitch before and after the gap together. Purl 1.*

Repeat these two rows until you have worked all stitches on the gusset needle.
Note that you will have two more stitches on the heel/gusset needle than you started with.
Resume knitting around both needles and decrease away the excess stitches to bring the total back to 24 stitches.

Reset the needles so they are arranged as follows:

needle 1: 12 stitches
needle 2: 6 stitches
needle 3: 6 stitches
Knit one round

Next round: needle 1: [k2tog] twice, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, [k2tog] twice;
needle 2: [k2tog] twice, k1, yo, k1, yo;
needle 3:k1, yo, k1, yo, [k2tog] twice

Purl one round
Knit two round

Repeat last 4 rounds once more.
Bind off loosely. Weave in the ends.

Repeat for second sock or knit two at a time

Even in the summer, as knitters we need to plan for cooler times. We have been stocking up with warm woolens to knit. Last week we got in a big shipment of bright cascade 220 yarns.

As if these colors are not inspiring enough, how about this beautiful blanket featured in Knitty, The Lizard Ridge Blanket.

New Yarn Alert -- Techno from BLue Sky Alpaca

Even in the middle of the summer, we are bringing in new yarns for the Fall and Winter. The newest yarn from our favorite, BLue Sky Yarns, is Techno.

Techno is a luxurious blend of 68% baby alpaca / 10% extra fine merino / 22% silk. It is a a modern take on 1970’s neon and natural, the line includes seven groovy pop colors perfectly balanced with six granola-lover neutrals. New Yarn Inspiration

I love unpacking new yarn. The anticipation of what these pretty skeins will turn into. The hope that you'll like the colors I picked. Summer is a strange time at a knitting store because it's hard to motivate knitters when it's 95 and sticky outside. But that is what summer yarn and air conditioning is for right?

So I see KRAFT (funny that is the name of my landlord's a/c contractor) outside which means they are working on my new a/c system. We have our old one working but it would be great to have a new high efficiency system in place soon too.

So next is the arrival of Curtis from UPS with my new Ultra Pima Cotton from Cascade. 10 new colors. It's a DK yarn (22-24 stitches per 4 inches) and each skein has 220 yards. Priced at 7.50$/skein, it's a bargain luxury yarn. It has a subtle shimmer and soft hand. I can't wait to get this on the needles. I found a few patterns free online to motivate you.

First is from Fiona Ellis for Cascade. It's a pretty cabled summer vest.

The pattern is available here. It uses 3 to 5 skeins depending on your size.

Another option is something crocheted. This shawl that you can find here.

This yarn is versatile. A quick search on ravelry shows me everything from baby stuff, shawls, and even lingerie. I love this tank top. The pattern is available here

so many people come in and talk about travelling and the big question is "can I bring my knitting needles on the plane?" the first assumption is no. THAT IS NOT CORRECT!

I love this quote from the TSA blog. (who knew they could be funny)....

"Bigfoot is probably one of the best known urban legends, but nail clippers, knitting needles and corkscrews are probably the most believed"

Again directly from the source...

"Knitting needles, carried by grandma, Mrs. Claus or Jeremy down the street are permitted. Plastic, metal, clay, titanium... Whatever... Permitted." (i guess they don't know about bamboo needles)

So TSA is okay with knitting needles in carry-on packages. I would always check a specific airline if you are worried. Also if you are travelling overseas, TSA regulates US air traffic but other countries may have other rules so just beware when you are coming home that there is a potential for different reactions to knitting needles.

Eco Cloud Knitting

Every season, we try out a few new yarns. Some become old favorites like Blue Sky Worsted and other are more like summer flings, fun for the season but not a lasting affair. I think I may have found another favorite for seasons to come... Cascade Eco Cloud.

When the first shipment of Eco Cloud arrived, we were busy making swatches for a baby blanket made with Blue Sky Cotton. I think we caught the blanket fever and thought a swatch blanket knit with four colors of the Eco Cloud would be a lovely and distinctively mature option for a baby blanket for the store. Maureen jumped at the opportunity to start knitting.

Maureen gets to knit and I promised to sew all the swatches together. We'll be all set for another chilly winter.

This is a new pattern that we developed at the store for our Knitting 201 class. Just wanted to share with everyone....

Materials:

Us 8 needle
200 yards of worsted weight yarn
Cable needle
Darning needle
Crochet hook

Abbreviations
C8F: slip 4 stitches onto cable needle hold in Front; k1, p1, k1, p1 from left hand needle; K1, p1, k1, p1 from cable needle.

C8B: slip 4 stitches onto cable needle hold in Back; k1, p1, k1, p1 from left hand needle; K1, p1, k1, p1 from cable needle

With waste yarn and crochet hook, provisionally cast on 32 stitches.

With main color, work as follows:

Row1: * k1, p1 repeat from * to end.

Row2: same as 1

Row3: same as 1

Row 4: C8F, [k1, p1]4x, C8B [k1,p1]4x

Rows 5,6,7: same as 1

Row 8: [k1, p1]4x, C8B [k1,p1]4x C8f

Repeat from row 1 until cowl measures 36 inches.
Work rows 1 and two again.
Leave on needles. Undo cast on and using three needle bind off to join two ends.

Baby Blanket Pattern

You have no idea how many baby blankets we help knit here at the store. I often scribble a pattern for blanket knitter. This time, I took a picture of the finished project so we can now post a simple pattern but made with pretty yarn then transforms into a beautiful gift.

Easy Baby Blanket

Suggested materials:

• Us 9 needles (24 to 32 inch circular)

• 800 yards worsted weight yarn. (suggested yarns include Lorna's Laces Shepard Worsted or
Blue Sky Worsted Cotton)

• Darning needle

• Stitch markers (not necessary but useful for keeping pattern correct)

Gauge: 4 stitches equal 1 inch

Note: If you use stitch markers, place them after k4, and then after each ten stitches until 4 remain.

With US 9 needles, Cast on 128 stitches

Knit 6 rows

Next row k4 * k10, p10 repeat from * to last 4 stitches

Repeat last row 9 more times

Next row k4 * p10 , k10 repeat from * to last 4 stitches

Repeat last row 9 more times

Repeat last 20 rows until desired length (sample blanket measures 40" long)

Knit 6 row.

Bind off all stitches.

Weave in all ends and block lightly.

Learn to Knit:
Beginner Knit Class March 13, 20, 27: This is where we start. Also a great refresher course. Three sessions total. Learn to knit, purl, stockinette stitch, seed stitch, cast on, bind off. $80/plus materials.

Knitting 201:
Do you already know who to knit but want to try out some new techniques. We will explore cables, colorwork and lace in this new three week class. Each week is different technique. THis is a great next step after our beginner classes to advance your knitting education! class is $80 plus materials.

Knit A Sweater:
We have two classes. One just featuring men's sweaters that started on March 1 and a women's sweater class that starts on March 5. For the class starting on March 5, I choose three sweaters. One Easy for first time sweater knitters, one intermediate and one challenging. This class is designed for anyone who knows how to knit and purl. The rest is what we go over in class! We meet Saturdays in March (5, 12, 19, and 26 from 11:30 to 1:00 pm) to learn new techniques, to encourage, to motivate, to inspire and of course to make a new sweater. Learn to Knit Socks:
Learn to Knit socks from the toe up and short row heels. You can chooe from double points, two circulars or magic loop. Learn Lace and Make a beautiful Lap Blanket:
A beautiful pattern by Jared Flood. A simple lace baby-blanket worked on large needles with yarn held double. This pattern makes a quick gift for any wool-loving baby in your life. A new class: Men's Sweater Class

Not just for the boys... but this class features men's designs (designed by men too!).

I've chosen three different patterns. One Easy for first time sweater knitters, one intermediate and one challenging. This class is designed for anyone who knows how to knit and purl. The rest is what we go over in class! We meet Tuesdays in March (1, 8, 15 and 22) from from 6:30 to 8:00 to learn new techniques, to encourage, to motivate, to inspire and of course to make a new sweater

Here are some nice sweaters for men (and that I'd probably borrow from Alan's Closet too). They are timeless additions to one's wardrobe. If you are interested in taking the class and maybe these sweaters don't appeal in the same way to you. Introducing an old knitting friend

So yesterday on a snowy day at the store, I pondered my next design project. See a small swatch of it. It has to stay underwraps a little longer. But it will be part of something big that I can announce very soon.

I knew my design was going to have cables and lace. I wanted a basic worsted weight yarn. I looked around and came to an old friend, Karabella Aurora 8.

This yarn is one that I had on opening day and 6 years later I still love. The reasons are many. Here are just a few...
1. Color range. Karabella has over 100 colors of Aurora 8. I love many of them. I know many of them by number for example, 138, 1556, 1350, 1148, just to name a few.
2. Stitch Definition. The twist of this yarn is distinct. It makes for almost perfect stitch definition from the simpliest of stitches, i.e. stockinette stitch to the more complex cables and lace.
3. Value. It's a very refined merino that is resonably priced. For about $30, you can make a nice scarf. I save all my scraps so I can make free form fair isle hats for the kids and holiday presents.

Thursday and Snow Day Rules at Stitch DC

First, yes we are open but with provisions....

1. We are open from 11 to 5 pm today
2. All evening classes are cancelled tonight. If you are in the classes, you should receive an email and we will work with everyone to make up the sessions.
3. We are stocked up here... needles, yarns, (we just got in a shipment of Spud and Chloe Outer yesterday) and even some new spring yarns if you can think beyond snowy knitting.

Learn Intarsia at Stitch DC

I've been looking for new and interesting patterns to highlight in classes. How about this for our Intarsia/Colorwork Class...

This is a two day class (2/5 and 2/13 from 1:30 to 3:00pm and costs $45 plus materials.

Some of the techniques involved will be color changing in the same row, short rows, wrapping and turning and reading a pattern. It is designed for anyone who knows how to knit and purl. So if you just graduated from our learn to knit classes, this is a great next step and you'll have a pretty new purse!

Class Cancelled for Tonight

Due to the icy conditions today and fear that the roads and sidewalks may ice over, class is cancelled for tonight. No fear though, we have four options for you to finish your class:

1. tomorrow 1/19 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
2. Thursday 1/27 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
3. Sunday, 1/30 from 11:30 to 1pm
4. Saturday, 2/5 from 11:30 to 1 pm

For the last class, we will learn how to finish your hat and finish your scarf, weave in loose ends and answer any questions. Please confirm with me your preferred class date. And if these these rescheduled dates do not work, please let me know.

Never too late to knit -- Free hat pattern

It's never too late to knit a hat. Really, pick out a chunky yarn and us 8 needles and cast on tonight. Watch a holiday movie (I watched White Christmas) as I knit this hat.

Darning Needle

To fit an average adult size head, 22-23" round

With Color A, Cast on 90 stitches. Place marker and join round taking care not to twist.
Round 1: *K2, p1 repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat round 1 until hat measures 1"
Next round: *K9, m1 repeat from * to end of round (100 stitches)
Knit 1 round in COLOR A.
Change to COLOR B, knit 2 rounds
Change to COLOR A, knit 4 rounds.
Repeat the Last 6 rounds until hat measures 7" tall.
Start decreases and continue to work in established stripe pattern (I started my decreases on round 4 of the COLOR A sequence. This allowed me to finish with two rounds of red at the top of the hat [see picture])

Round 1: *Knit 2, k2tog, repeat from * across round
Round 2: Knit all stitches
Round 3: *K1, k2tog, repeat from * across round
Round 4: knit
Round 5: *k2tog, repeat from * across round
Round 6: *k2tog repeat from * across round
Cut thread and feed thru remaining stitches. Cinch and secure yarn inside. Weave in ends.

Surprise Hat

This hat is made with one skein of Tilli Tomas Mystery Ball. We have a bunch in stock and so fun and pretty! I call it a surprise hat for two reasons: 1. because the yarn changes every 10-15 yards and so each skein is a bit of a surprise mixing silks, boucle, beads and ribbons and 2) because at this time of year, we are often surprised and need an extra gift for someone who surprised you with a thoughtful gift.

Here is the pattern. Enjoy!

Materials:
Tilli Tomas Mystery Skein
US 9 16" circulars.
US 9 double pointed needles
darning needle

Cast on 70 stitches on US9 16" circulars.
Knit every row for the first yarn type, when the yarn changes switch to purl every row. And just switch back and forth as the yarn changes in the skein.
When the hat measures 7" start to decrease as follows: (note, you may need to change to double pointed while decreasing)
DECREASE ROW 1: *k3, k2tog, repeat from * to end.
All alternate rows, knit.
Decrease row 2: *k2, k2tog, repeat from * to end
Decrease row 3: *k1, k2tog, repeat from * to end
Decrease row 4: *k2tog repeat from * to end.
Cut yarn and using a darning needle pull yarn thru existing stitches , cinch and secure on the inside.

Leggo of my scarf

After writing this out a couple of times last night for some customers, I decided I'd share it with the world. It's a simple waffle knit pattern with applied icords for the edges. It makes a very nice scarf for any guy. Maybe Alan will get one in red this year.

I made this scarf a couple of years ago in Supercashmere but wanted to reknit it in the new Blue Sky Suri Merino.

Leggo my Scarf Pattern
Gauge: 5 stitches = 1"
Needles: US 10
Yarn Requirements: 2 skeins of Blue Sky Suri Merino (164 yards each)
Abbreviations:
WYIB: with yarn in back
PW: purl wise

Finished scarf: 5" wide by 45" long

Cast on 25 stitches
Row 1: Slip 3 Purlwise WYIB, k1, * p1, k1 repeat from * to last 3 stitches, P3
Row 2: Slip 3 PW wyib, knit to last three stitches, P3
repeat rows 1 and 2 until 45" long or desired length.

Bind off loosely.
ENJOY!

Sweater progress

Today home with kids. Working on some secret projects and store samples. I really, really want to make the Stormsvale sweater for sweater class but I found this pretty magrite in my stash and decided I'd work on the Vine Yolk Cardigan. I'm almost at the sleeves (just 2 days of intermittent knitting). We are expecting more Imperial Ranch yarn that I think will be perfect for the Fair Isle Sweater so I might make two sweaters this season just for me.

I love seeing what my customers make with the yarns that they buy at Stitch DC. Last year, I had a customer walk in and want to learn to crochet. I did a class with her and she went off to practice what she learned. She came back a few weeks later with the start of a blanket. Making 12" squares she wanted to make a baby blanket.

She loved the yarn and the project so much, the blanket grew and then she decided to keep if for her herself. She proudly showed if off this weekend. And then she picked out yarn for the baby blanket she was supposed to make.

The pattern is easy.

Suggested yarn: super bulky (blue sky bulky; cascade magnum, classic elite twinkle)
Hook: p hook

Crochet Pattern : Bushy Stitch (multiple of 3 chain plus 1)
For a 6” (12”) square Chain 19 (37). Row 1: Turn, skip 3 chain (1 dc, 2ch, 1sc) in next chain, skip 2 chain, (2dc, ch 2, 1sc) in next ch repeat from * to last stitch. a good day for painting yarns

it's beautiful outside so i'm going to paint some more yarns in the courtyard today. here is a sample of what I did yesterday with Maureen.

The yarn is superwash merino 4, !sock yarn!, 378 yards. One skein makes a pair of socks. Look forward to having a full shelve of our house painted yarns to show off this weekend.

Thinking about color names? What do you think? the theme has been Beatles songs so far so I'm thinking Baby's In Black. Comments/Suggestions?

Something to make you smile

Sometimes I find a pattern that just makes me laugh out loud. This is one of those patterns. Then as a teacher, I look further and think this is a great teaching project because you have lace work, color work, pattern reading, etc. We have tons of cascade 220. LOCAL KNITTERS AND CRAFTERS TO SHARE TALENT WITH KIDS IN NEED ON AUGUST 22, 2010

The DC Craft Mafia is teaming up with Stitch DC to promote Happy Heads, DC, a local charity that benefits the District of Columbia’s youngest residents. An afternoon of knitting, food and craft giveaways on August 22 at Stitch DC’s Capitol Hill location at 731 8th St, SE will benefit Happy Heads, DC. Crafters from across the area have been invited.

Happy Heads, DC was launched during the 2003-2004 winter season by a former employee of the Safe Shores—The D.C. Children's Advocacy Center, a direct service nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and working directly with child victims of sexual and physical abuse in the District of Columbia. DC area knitters and crocheters were asked to pool their talents to make hats for children served by Safe Shores, many of whom did not have proper winter clothing protection.

In 2005, the program received attention from members of Congress, including Safe Shores supporter Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC At-Large), Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY 2nd), and former Congressman Bud Cramer (D-AL-5th), founder of the National Children’s Advocacy Center.

DC Craft Mafia is the local chapter of the national group Craft Mafia, which is dedicated to strengthening the independent artist community and educating the public on the importance of buying handmade crafts and performing community outreach. This will be Happy Head’s first event at Stitch DC. Participants are asked to make a donation of new school supplies, new toiletries or other items that Safe Shores needs in order to continue to protect and serve DC children.

A shorter class that makes a smaller project. Designed for busy Washingtonians, this class is two 1.5 hours classes. You'll learn to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off.

The project is a fashionable hat with a pretty bow made with chunky yarn and bigger needles. $50 /plus materials.

Stomach flu with the kids prevented me from posted on Friday so Wednesday is the new Friday. Gotta figure out what the new wednesday is. I grew up on Long Island and according to Carvel. "Wednesday is Sunday so maybe another post on Sunday."

This long post is for Knitters Today. Crocheters and Quilters I'll have a big post for you on Friday so get as many square ready as possible.

Knitters... How are the squares coming along. I have two strips that we can now knit. This is entrelac so you need to follow each row. It does work but it's magic as it does. Trust me...

MAKE 2 (each will measure 3inches by 37.5 inches long)

NOTE: Work base triangles, followed by left side triangle, tier one, right side triangle and tier two. Work tiers one and two until desired length; end with one more tier one section, followed by the final tier triangles.

Base Triangles:
CO 10.
*Row 1: (RS) k1, turn
Row 2: and all WS rows: purl all sts in that section
Row 3: sl 1, k1, turn
Row 5: sl 1, k2, turn
Row 7: sl 1, k3, turn
Row 9: sl 1, k4, Do not turn.*
Repeat from * to * to end of row, turn.

Left side triangle
Row 1: (WS) k1, turn
Row 2: kfb, turn

Final Tier Triangles
Row 1: (RS) With RS facing, pick up and knit 5sts along selvedge of next square or triangle. For the first triangle only, the st remaining counts as the first picked up st. Sl last st picked up to left needle and ssk, turn.
Row 2 and all WS rows: purl to the end of sts in the section. Turn.
Row 3: k2tog, k3, ssk, turn

Make Your Own Gees Bend Inspired Quilt -- Class and a History Lesson

Crafts are often more than crafts. And the Gees Bend Quilt story is a piece of American History. Did you know... "

Martin Luther King Jr. visited and spoke in Gee's Bend on the eve of the Selma march in 1965; later, mules from Gee's Bend pulled his casket.

Traditionally, quilts were hung on clotheslines to "air out" during the spring. Many quilters used this once-a-year public display as an opportunity to discover new ideas for their compositions.

Gee’s Benders have coined their own terms for common quilt patterns. They call the square-in-a-square Log Cabin pattern by the name "Housetop"; the Courthouse Steps variation is known locally as "Bricklayer." The Roman Stripes or Fence Rail pattern is, in Gee’s Bend, a "Crazy" quilt (no relation to the Crazy quilts made with irregular scraps).

In 1937 and '38, the federal government commissioned two series of photographs of Gee's Bend. The images have since become some of the most famous images of Depression-era American life.

In earlier years, one of the primary influences on the Gee's Bend quilt aesthetic was the newspaper- and magazine-collages used for insulation on the inside walls of homes in the rural American South.

Gee’s Bend is a small rural community nestled into a curve in the Alabama River southwest of Selma, Alabama. Founded in antebellum times, it was the site of cotton plantations, primarily the lands of Joseph Gee and his relative Mark Pettway, who bought the Gee estate in 1850. After the Civil War, the freed slaves took the name Pettway, became tenant farmers for the Pettway family, and founded an all-black community nearly isolated from the surrounding world. During the Great Depression, the federal government stepped in to purchase land and homes for the community, bringing strange renown — as an "Alabama Africa" — to this sleepy hamlet.
The town’s women developed a distinctive, bold, and sophisticated quilting style based on traditional American (and African American) quilts, but with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art. The women of Gee’s Bend passed their skills and aesthetic down through at least six generations to the present

Mystery Craft A Long ...POST #2

How are you doing? have you chosen a craft? Are you a polycrafter? I'm thinking I'm going to merge my crochet and knit pieces but don't worry, I'll stick to the first plan for all of you!

Quilters: finished cutting? are you ready to sew? the seam allowances (included in the cut pieces) are 1/4 inch.
Step 1: Take your center square and sew a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangle to the left and right sides.
Step 2: Press the seams down.
Step 3: Sew the longer cut strips to the top and bottom of the rectangle you made in Step 1 above.
Step 4: Press seams again.
Repeat steps 1-4 twenty-four (24) more times

Knitters: I got lots of calls wondering what the 7 1/2 inch square looked like at the end. I also got requests to show how to pick up stitches.

here is how the piece should look after you knit the center and pick up on the left and right selvedges.

How to Pick Up Stitches:

1. Looking at the right side of the rectangle. Hold knitted rectangle in Left Hand and insert right hand needle into first stitch as if to knit. (photo1)

2. Wrap yarn around right hand needle and pull up a new stitch. (photo 2)

3. Insert right hand needle into second stitch on knitted piece in left hand. (photo 3 below)

4. Wrap yarn as if you are knitting (you are!) (photo 4) and pull up new stitches (photo 5)

5. Two stitches picked up. Continue picking up stitches across row. To pick up evenly, place a marker at the half way mark and try to pick up half of the stitches up to that marker.

Knitters and crocheters, continue working on your squares and I'll post the next part of the puzzle on Friday.

An oldie and a goodie

This is one of our best selling easy, easy scarf pattern. I made the original one back in 2004 when we first opened. I've updated the sample recently with our new handpainted Dia Duit Mohair.

Dia Duit is our new local handpainted yarns available exclusively at Stitch DC. I hope to share more about this new venture very soon with all of you!

The Scarf Pattern
Materials: 1 skein Dia Duit Mohair (shown in colorway "Frankly my dear...") (silk mohair approximately 230 yards per skein)
US 8 knitting needles

Gauge: 4.5 stitches equal 1" in 3x3 ribbing

With US 8 needles, cast on 36 stitches.

Row 1: Knit 3, Purl 3 to end.
Repeate row 1 until desired length. If you use the entire skein, it will be about 6 feet long and to make sure you have enough to bind off repeat Row 1 until approximately 1 yard of yarn remains and bind off loosely.
Weave in end and Enjoy!!!

QUILTING:
Cut the the following:
1. twenty five 3 1/2" squares,
2. fifty 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" rectangles
3. fifty 2 1/2" by 7 1/2" rectangles

Knitting:
Gauge= 4 stitches equal 1" in garter stitch
Start by cast on 12 stitches
Knit every row for 3" inches. Cast off.
Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the left selvedge side of the initial square (change colors if you want, have fun enjoy!). Knit every row until piece measures 2 1/4" from cast on row. Cast off.
Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the right selvedge side of the initial square (change colors if you want, have fun enjoy!). Knit every row until piece measures 2 1/4" from cast on row. Cast off.

Looking so the the peice measures 7 1/2 inches across the top and bottom. Pick up and knit 30 stitches (again you change color if you want now) across the top and knit every row until current section measures 2 1/4" tall. cast off.
Now repeat and Pick up and knit 30 stitches (again you change color if you want now) across the bottom and knit every row until current section measures 2 1/4" tall. cast off.
You now have a 7 1/2" square. Repeat the square pattern until you have 25 total

Crochet
Gauge: 4 single crochet equal 1"

Chain 13, turn and single crochet into the second from the hook, then single crochet (SC) across row (12 SC) turn.
Chain 2, make first single crochet into first stitch, then sc across row, turn.
repeat for 3" inches. fasten off.

Turn to left selvedge of the initial square (change colors if you want, have fun enjoy!). Work 12 SC down the selvedge row, turn, Chain 2, make first single crochet into first stitch, then sc across row, turn.

Repeat previous row until current section measures 2 1/4" inches. fasten off.

Turn to right selvedge of the initial square, and single crochet 12 stitches down the selvedge edge. turn,
Row 2: Chain 2, make first single crochet into first stitch, then sc across row, turn.

Repeat previous row until current section measures 2 1/4" inches. fasten off.

Looking so the the piece measures 7 1/2 inches across the top and bottom. Single crochet 30 stitches (again you change color if you want now) across the top turn,

Kid Slippers -- Free Pattern

So I was so anxious to knit with the new Dia Duit Yarns. I chose "Across The Universe". Really bright colors and lots of them! Here is the finished slipper. I hope to get a picture with Oonagh wearing them (still working on this one. she moves quick!)

Materials:

Dia Duit Yarns DK Hand Painted Superwash Merino (available exclusively at Stitch DC)

US 3 24" circular needle

darning needle

markers (suggested but not required)

Size: 5 inches long from toe to heel

7 inches around center foot.

These fit Oonagh who is wearing a size 6-7 shoe and is 18 months old.

Gauge:

7 stitches = 1 inch in stockinette stitch

Notes:

1. I used the magic loop method for knitting these slippers.

2. To make larger, simply make more toe increase to fit, then work until 2 inches shorter than foot. You may have to adjust how many short rows you do for heel but make a small set first and you'll quickly feel the rhythm of turning the heel.

3. I use Yarn Overs (YOs) instead of wraps.

4. You may also choose to put some puffy glue on the bottom of these slippers so baby can walk safely around in them.

5. You will have tons left over from the smallest size. so make a pair and give away a second pair!

Abbreviations:
YO: yarn over
K2tog: knit next two stitches together

INSTRUCTIONS: (make 2 for a pair)

Cast on 20 stitches using the turkish cast on method.

Knit 2 rounds.

Start toe increases as follows:

Round 1: * k1, m1, k8, m1, k1 repeat from * across round.

Round 2: knit all stitches

Repeat last two rows increasing the number of stitches to knit in the middle by 2 each repeat. (i.e. ROW 4: *k1, m1, k10, m1, k1 repeat from * and Row 6: *k1, m1, k12, m1, k1) until total 48 stitches.

Continue knitting in the round even (no more increases) until foot measures 3 1/2" long.

Turn the Heel as follows

Row 1: Knit 23, turn

Row 2: Yo, purl to last stitch on first needle, turn

Row 3: Yo, knit to last stitch before the previous yarn over, turn

Row 4: Yo, purl to last stitch before the previous yarn over, turn

repeat last two rows until you have 10 stitches remaining in the center. You will have 9 yo/stitch couples on either side.

Next row: knit to the first yo, knit the yarn over and the next stitch together, turn

Next row: Yo, purl to the first yo, purl the yarn over and the next stitch together, turn

Next row, Yo, knit to the next yo, knit the 2 YOs and the next stitch together, turn
Next row: YO, purl to next yo, purl the 2 YOs and the next stitch together, turn
repeat the last two rows until all the stitches are worked.
Return to knitting in the round. Knit one row and bind off.

Weave in ends.

Meet at Stitch DC Sunday, July 11, 2010, 1:00-4:00 PM to crochet coral for the Smithsonian Community Reef. This is a free get-together with Jennifer Lindsay, who is coordinating the local reef. Learn how easy it is to crochet "hyperbolically," meet the other reef-makers and help raise awareness about the plight of the world's coral reefs through fiber art. Materials will be provided or you can bring your own. All skill levels welcome. Please bring your corals, finished or in progress, to share.

Quilt Progress

So last week, I picked up one of our custom made Jelly Rolls and a charm packet and started to make a quilt for this upcoming class. I cut the jelly rolls into 3.5" pieces and 8" pieces. Then I started to sew.

The individual quilt squares looked like this

I just kept making square and pressing them until I had 25.

Next I arranged, and rearranged, and rearranged again the twenty five squares until I was pleased with the distribution and predetermined randomness of the quilt top. Here is what it looks like now.

Next step is sew the rows together. If you are interested in learning more about how to make a jelly roll quilt or just find out what is a quilting jelly roll (hint... nothing to do with a bakery). Sign up for the class. And the best is I have tons of fabric left over to make matching shams or a small (crazy quilted) garment for Oonagh.

Intro to Lace knitting

Just a little post about Nora's latest finished project. She was at the store yesterday with me. She made tons of tomatoes and even a cute summer bag using her new sunglass fabric.

Custom Knit Baby Blanket Class

Learn to knit a custom baby blanket. This class assume you know knit and purl. We'll teach you the rest in class. We'll pick stitch patterns, yarns, swatch and make a custom blanket with a signature center square that you can knit an initial, heart, name into.

The class is three 1.5 hour classes. I used super bulky for yarn for Oonagh's blanket but you can choose anyone that you want. Some good washable choices are Karabella Aurora 8 or bulky, Blue Sky cottons, Zodiac Cotton just to name a few. Students receive 10% discount off materials.

Another Quilt Class

Using pre-cut jelly rolls and charm packets available at the store, we'll make a classic quilt.

You'll learn to measure and cut quilt pieces, you'll learn to perfect your 1/4" seams. You'll learn to make a quilt sandwich with batting and binding strip.

The class consists of three 1.5 hour classes over 6 weeks. There is homework. We provide sewing machines at the store and you can use the store machines up to another 2 extra hours weekly during business hours (by appointment) to complete any extra homework.

This is a beginner quilting class. If you have never used a machine, please take one of our beginner sewing classes before this to feel comfortable with the class.

Class fee: $90 plus materials. All materials are available at Stitch DC and you receive a 10% discount off all materials used in the class.

Learn to knit socks

Fathers Day Knitted Tie

This is also a fun gift for a recent graduate. Nora and I are making one right now. Yes, Nora Emily so if a 10 year old can knit this so can you!

Materials:
2 skeins of Karabella Aurora 8 (98 yards each) [I chose two colors -- charcoal (color A and green Color B]
Size US 5 needles
darning needle

Pattern:
Cast on 15 stitches with Color A.
Knit four rows.
Attach Color B and knit four rows
Change to color A up the side of the work and work 2 rows
Change to Color B and work 2 rows.
Repeat the last four rows until tie measures 13".
Staying in pattern, decrease as follows k2, [k2tog]2x, k3, [k2tog]2x, k2 -- 11 stitches
Continue in stripe pattern until tie measures 26"
Next row row, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 -- 9 stitches
continue with 9 stitches in garter stitch (knitting every row) and stripe pattern until tie measures 52" long.
Cast off and weave in ends.

The favorite gift for Father's Day is a tie. And I love the way Alan looks when he is all dressed up in a suit and tie. So we brainstormed about gift ideas at the store and I decided to share some of them with you. All weekend, we'll be teaching you how to make a knitted, crocheted, or sewn tie. The class is $10 per session plus materials. Even if you've never knit or crocheted or sewn, you can make these items. And Dad will always wear them!

For my sewn tie, I chose a fabric with cars on it. I may even make a second for Cole. Wish me luck getting a photo of the two together next weekend!

Indie Study from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. This is the place to bring stalled projects, get that extra help with a technique or learn a new skill. You bring in the question/issue/project, and I help you. Easy Peasy. The class is $15 and just drop in!

Tuesday, June 8

Beginner Knit class starts. As of 11:13 am Monday , we have 1 spot left in the class. You'll learn to knit, purl, and use these two base stitches to make other patterns, increase, decrease and bind off. It's a perfect foundation class for all your future knitting. Tweety Bird Applique Quilt Class: Learn to machine quilt with this original design by Katie. Make it crib, full or queen size, you decide and get 10% off materials. Crochet Your First Sweater. We pushed back the start date of this class because I was in Philadelphia last week. So there is still time to sign up. Your First Crocheted Sweater: Know how to crochet, but want to learn more. How about your first sweater? This is a perfect step up from scarfs and blankets. Made with beautiful cottons this is a perfect compliment to any summer wardrobe.

Stitch DC is offering week-long summer classes for kids ages between 8-12. Sign up for more than one class and receive a 10 % discount off all additional summer kids classes. Intro to Knitting and Crochet

This class is for students 8 to 12years old who want to learn to knit and crochet. During this week-long workshop, students will learn to dye their own yarns using Kool-Aid dyes. And then knit a scarf with their own creations. Students will also learn basic crochet to make flower embellishments for their handmade scarf. Class size is limited to 6 students

Learn to Sew a Tee-Shirt Quilt.

This class is for students 8 to 12years old who want to learn to sew by hand. We also added made one weekend session for a parent and child class! During this week-long workshop, students will learn the basics of hand sewing by making a quilt using old tee-shirts and upcycled fabrics. Kids will bring tee-shirts and we'll cut them and sew them into a 45" x 45" quilt. This is a great way to upcycle old materials and turn old tee-shirts to a cherished memory blanket.
